The day after Easter I went to go check on the cows as normal… and much to my surprise Sally had definitely surprised!!…
In a video I posted on The Sparrow Way Facebook page, I was walking towards Sally and telling my husband and parents that she was all alone by a tree laying down, one of the signs that she’s going into labor. As I walked closer and still recording, she got up and was showing even more signs. She was a bit bloody and as I turned the camera to follow her I spotted it!!! The most adorable, tiny, curled up, ball of joy! I lost it.
If you watched the video already, I’m sorry for my squeals and screams. If you haven’t seen it yet and are considering it… brace yourself for not only how loud and excited I get but the cuteness overload of Josie!
Being that excited may seem odd to some of you, or most? But after days and days and days of checking on our momma cows, we were so excited to finally see a new baby!
A little over a month ago we, unfortunately, had lost a baby. We were probably only an hour late of Red birthing her heifer and something went wrong. She was small for her size and we couldn’t tell of any swelling on her body. Some friends of ours had looked at her and thought she must have just been premature and the momma possibly didn’t clean her face off right away. Us not being there while she was in labor made me feel so guilty… and like “If only I was there I could have helped!” That. Was. Tough. I know ranching and having livestock is hard sometimes… and messy, and you fight all the elements, and (insert what else you can think of here) but seeing loss like that is so, so hard.
But, the day after Easter, made it all worth it! We are obviously learning all of this as we go, thank goodness for my husband’s background! And my dad’s! And thank you for God’s grace and love in all of this as well!
So, those screams and squeals that my family keep making fun of me for, they were totally called for! We’ve got two more expecting mommas and we are so excited for Miss Josie Dunn to have some brothers or sisters!!
Now… Shall we look at some pictures and then squeal inside… or out loud…?
Here’s to hoping for warm weather like we got the last two days!! And believing for perfect, healthy calves!

How precious. We have only had a couple calves but many foals. They are each one a blessing and such a special event. So happy for this calf and many more to come.
Thank you!! It’s been a learning experience for sure, and hard work lol. But seeing that new baby calf makes it all worth it!! Especially when she runs and jumps, learning her new legs! 😉
