Why sparrow?

Why did we choose to name our blog The Sparrow Way?

I was always drawn to the verses about the sparrows and birds in the Bible, even at a young age!
I love this verse! It says that God loves us so much that He will provide and take care of His children… Matthew 6:25-26 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, not about your body, what you will put on.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

In Isaiah I read that waiting is a good thing, that it makes us stronger… Isaiah 40:31 But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

I read that even though a sparrow has importance, we have so much more… Matthew 10:29-31 says, Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.  But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Not only did the Bible have a huge impact on me, but music did as well.  Especially when I heard ‘His Eye Is On The Sparrow’ by Crystal C. Lewis. I’d belt that song out for days!!… I remember being about 7 years old sitting in my bedroom with my bulky new CD player with headphones that I’d eventually wear the cord out of.  I’d sit there for hours, it’d feel like, listening to my favorite worship songs and feeling the presence of God. Little old me in that little old bedroom.  Rocking back and forth against my bunk bed… what seemed to me like hours was most likely only a matter of minutes, but God was moving and making Himself known to me. Showing me that even at that age I was worth something, to Him!

Sparrows are weaved in and out of our lives, marriage, business and… even my arm! My sister and I have matching sparrow tattoos because we wanted to always remember that our worth to God was much more than a flock of sparrows and that He will always care for us!

My business, as many of you know is Sparrow Candle Co. I literally woke up one day with this dream of having and running my own candle company… I’d like to say and believe that it was right from God and I do… I feel that.  He gives me joy to run my business, I enjoy getting to be creative in it all!  And I love when my mom and I go hunting for the gold! (thrift shopping)  I recently stumbled across the word ‘recherche’. It means carefully chosen, rare or exotic. I carefully hand select every container that I use for Sparrow… it takes time but it’s so worth it.

I’ve been pouring myself into my little business lately and one small part of the entire Sparrow Candle picture is that we go hunt and dig for the recherche… Mom and I go junkin’, we thrift shop, go to garage sales and Goodwill, we shop Facebook and Craigslist to find the perfect, rare pieces, that we literally hand pick.  Isn’t that like God?  He finds us and picks us out of all the chaos of a busy life, dusts us off and makes us whole again.  Ready to be filled.  Ready to be used. Psalm 40:2  He lifted me out of the pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

Last reason…  For over a year now I have been noticing these tiny birds that like to hang out back by my bedroom/bathroom windows.  They stay so low to the ground and flutter all around in the weeds and low branches.  I’ve noticed them hanging around a lot more just these past two weeks and I always just think that they are finches… they sure look like them!

Then while I was second guessing really going for it, (for starting this blog) I searched for some pictures of sparrows to maybe incorporate into our logo… guess what?…. They’re sparrows!  I took that as a sign to trust God and go for it! There’s nothing that I want more than to get as close as I can with My Father, My Creator.  The next, biggest thing that I wish for is that my life looks like Him, that what I say and how I live my life may draw others’ hearts to Him… I took that last sign of the sparrows out back as a little push, a push to jump off this so-called cliff and to dive right into what God has next for us.  In that, I pray that whatever we share and write about that it leads you to hunger more for God and to get closer to Him!
Is there a cliff somewhere in your life that you’ve been avoiding or second-guessing?…. Jump. He will catch you.

Psalm 91:4 “He will cover you with His feathers. He will shelter you with His wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”

  1. Beautiful thoughts to share. Thank you. Reminded me gratefully that to God we matter so much, and we need to rest in Him and trust Him.

  2. I so love your writings and insight. Your transparency and heart for God is inspiring to me and many more I’m sure.

  3. You sound like my oldest daughter & she is a Sparrow & bird lover from the Bible. Her favorite verses to keep her going through 4 autoimmune diseases since her late 20’s. God bless your journey. I hope to one day jump off & get my blog going. Still studying & learning before jumping. God lead me to it but I had NO idea what a blog was till 5 months ago!!
